Clinical experience:

I have been in post for 25 years working as an emergency general surgeon on the on-call rota as well as a specialist colorectal surgeon, diagnosing and treating patients with diseases of the large bowel (colon, rectum & anus).
I now work less than full time but am still part of the on-call emergency service. My elective practise centres around offering a pelvic floor service. I continue to perform both diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy.

Teaching and Examiner:

All my career I have taught students and trainee surgeons. I have examined final year medical students as well as being responsible for organising the examinations. I am also a long-standing member of the Court of Examiners of the Royal College of Surgeons of England examining for the MRCS. I am both clinical and educational supervisor to junior doctors and well as surgical trainees.

Governance Experience:

I am joint cancer lead for the Trust and have been involved in many governance issues. I am a member of the Invited Review Mechanism of the Royal College of Surgeons. I am a past member of the Executive Council of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain & Ireland. I chaired the NHSeng Specialised Services Clinical Reference Group for Specialised Colorectal Services (2012-19).

Medico-legal experience:

I have performed numerous in house enquires/investigations and acted as a Professional Witness to the Coroner’s Court. At the invitation of the Royal College of Surgeons I have led reviews of surgical units and was involved in retraining a surgeon following the Stafford Hospital enquiry. I write medical reports for both claimants and defendants.

Research experience:

I have been senior author on a number of scientific abstracts and papers. https://scholar.google.co.uk/citations?user=UKjk6FkAAAAJ&hl=en. I peer review original articles for Cancer and Colorectal Disease as well as applications to various grant giving bodies.
